Ultra Marathon Racing
Lament life or live it.
It's your choice.
Detaching from the lounge and the wine glass.
One night in 2008 I was lying on the lounge lamenting life. I was stressed from work, unhappy and rapidly gaining weight. As I stuck my face into another glass of wine, my partner suggested that perhaps a hobby would help me get some work-life balance. I threw him a deadpan stare but I knew he was right.
My family diligently suffered through my arty phase, their true feelings only revealed when they asked if each artwork might be my final masterpiece. Then one Sunday afternoon while lying on that said same lounge, I remembered my childhood love for running. I jumped up, ran around the block and collapsed back onto the lounge exhausted. I knew without question I had been bitten by the running bug.
Eighteen months later I took part in the Great North 100km on the NSW Central Coast. One year after that I won the female division of the same race.
The following list of race results gives you an insight into what's possible when you decide to get off the lounge and put one foot in front on the other.
Even better, my face is no longer permanently attached to a wine glass. I haven't had a glass of alcohol now for more than five years.
